Sign up for Yahoo!’s 2 new free email addresses

You read that right, Yahoo! today (June 20) aims to triple the size of its globally-popular free online email service by adding two new domains as options to “@yahoo.com”.  Now you can choose “@ymail.com” and “@rocketmail.com” as Yahoo! email address options when you sign up for a new email.

Yahoo! Mail is the most popular web-based email in the world and according to industry statistics, this profitable ad-supported service has approximately 266 million users.  Adding new domains not only contributes to its growth but also gives users a chance at better email choices.

As you all know, free email addresses are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, which means users who sign up now have a better chance of getting your name in your email.  Why is this important?  Well, a Harris Interactive study commissioned by Yahoo! concluded that 70 percent of adults using the Internet would select an email address that includes all or part of their names.

According to Yahoo! Mail vice president John Kremer, “We recognize that people want an email address that reflects who they are. We have a lot of user IDs out there and it is pretty crowded. We want to remedy that and make sure users get the ID they want.”

Kremer added that Yahoo! expects users to readily recognize “Ymail” because it is used for a version of the email customized for mobile devices.  On the other hand, Rocketmail has a “hip retro feel” because it is a resurrected email address that belonged to a company Yahoo bought in 1997.
