Making the Jump: from WordPress.com to WordPress.org

Actually the more appropriate and technically correct sub-title is “from free blog host to a paid, self-hosted blog”.  I just had to go with the “WordPress.com to WordPress.org” because it’s what I basically did and it sounds better (hehehe, sorry poor excuse).

But seriously, I just made the jump.  After blogging in Blogger.com for a couple of years then switching to WordPress.com (for certain career-related reasons, hehehe), I finally decided to blog in a self-hosted one.  I learned a lot in doing so (check my blog post about it – Top 5 Lessons in Upgrading Your Blog from WordPress.com to WordPress.org) and I continue to learn as I try to manage and maximize my online presence in my blog.  There’s definitely no regrets and I’m so glad I finally decided to make the jump.

So please check it out, it’s in http://jonasdelosreyes.com.  I was able to import all my posts from my previous blogs so everything’s there.  See you on the other side!

  1. So Jonas, if I understand correctly, you are able to bring all your info across so probs.. But what about re-directing your members and users? Is there hope for them?

    • Hi Jamie,

Thanks for dropping by. Yes, I was able to easily import all my previous posts to my now self-hosted blog. As for re-directing members & users, retaining my previous subscribers was easy because I already use my own domain for the blog (basically, redirects users here). When I switched to my new blog, I pointed my domain to the present self-hosted one so people were continued to be updated & I was able to retain them as subscribers. However, I had to make this final post for people who might chance upon this blog so they know my present blog is now self-hosted and not here anymore.

  2. Thanks so much Jonas – that take a weight off my mind. So subscribers are updated, but as for people off the street dropping by, there is no way to auto redirect them to my new self-hosted blog (once I build it). I have to put a ‘new blog redirect’ link on the site to help them come across to it and hope that they click on it. Do I have that right?

Thanks so much – this is a great help :)
